I asked you how things had progressed since before last; I noticed that you’d painted the walls a simple peach which you told me you’d done last summer, you said that you did this to make the room feel bigger when the sun shone through the windows, only we both
knew it felt the same….and since then, you showed me how you’d made a peach embroidered bed set to match, silver incisions, hand sewn in and out and in and out and in and out all across its sides, meeting at the corners. The lamp shade stood tall in the corner
of the room, but it wasn’t necessary to turn it on. Cream roses stood proudly in their dull, grey vase, you told me how many times you’d watered them a day. I could see you flinch when I’d slipped off my shoes and pushed the toe caps against the white skirting,
everything had far too much order for your liking.
You brushed your skirt whilst you straightened it out, tossed your shoulder length brown hair, straightened your back and crossed one leg over its other, I didn’t think you particularly suited floral fabric much, it somehow lessened you.
“I’m perfectly happy” you told me (you sighed). I didn’t even have to ask you how you’d been getting on before I was already informed. We both knew how much you lied. What kept you from going mentally insane? from having a break down? from leaving my shoes on the
floor touching the skirting board? from painting the walls darker? I thought.
“The existence of precision” she whispered, exhausted.
